A lot of water coolers, especially those larger than 10 gallons, were straight sided. Some people added spigots to regular crocks also. If you remove the spigot and look at the hole through the crock, you'll see whetere the hole is glazed or not. If it's glazed then the hole was made at the time or manufacturing the crock. If it's not glazed, then the hole was drilled after leaving the factory.
