Success Filter Bottom

Paul-Found the bottom of a red wing success filter as shown on page 67 of Red Wing Stoneware. It had peculiar flakes off the top edge, like someone had taken a chisel and knocked pieces off the outside top edge, it was otherwise intact.

Any clue on the flaking, it appears very deliberate to me. Also, are these items hard to find? Thanks.
