Glad you like your new crock. Sounds like you're a potential new collector, and you should find lots of helpful information on this site.
Your 6 gallon crock is worth about $100. Hard to say what any individual crock was used for, but they were intended to be used for any sort of storage purposes. They're containers, and as such are the predecessors of tupperware and garbage cans.
I hope you've now got the bug and will keep collecting.:)
