Paul is absolutely right. Bleach is a base NOT AN ACID. Period!!! It is alkaline not acidic. Soaking in bleach can and often times does remove stains in stoneware with little or no visible damage. Cracks and dings are still ther just not as noticable. Art pottery, redware and porcelin are a different story. I will not enter the debate as to whether bleaching is adulterating the piece. Some people think that it is others do not. It's up to you to decide. In case anyone is interested one of the more popular uses for stoneware jugs was for Bleach. I have and continue to own many all with NO DAMAGE caused by storing the bleach in them. Jugs that were used to store acid often times do show damage especially to the glazing.
