Ray,

Sounds like you have a "snuff" or "preserve" jar, with the Albany slip glaze. These were made in very large numbers in the early 1900's, and were used, as the name implies, to store snuff or preserves. Yours is a one gallon jar - that's a lot of snuff!

These were made with a lid, with a small button knob. The lids are far less common nowadays than the jars themselves - seemed to break or get lost.
