If you have a bean pot that exactly matches the one in the book it is original red wing. As for how to tell saffron from regular clay look at the color, saffron is yellow, and often has seepage due to the clay being very porous. It is much more difficult to tell by weight. In addition red wing did a very good job of marking their saffron ware, a lot of ware is marked red wing/ saffron/ ware in a circle. As for repros, it is very difficult to match the red/orange glaze because it is made from uranium oxide, and its use has been baned by the FDA.
