I purchased a small piece of stoneware that is marked on the top "Red Wing Union Stoneware Co.and something blurred at the bottom of the oval". The item round, about 6" diameter and 7" long. It looks like the bottom half of a jug lying on its side, and on the bottom at the back are two small legs. At the front end of it around the top half it is embossed "Pat'd April 7 1885". The top inside of the rim is pushed inwards, leaving the bottom portion flat to the rim and an open portion that grain or water could be reached by a small bird or animal. There is no tray at all. It is perfectly round except for the two little legs on the back side to keep it from rolling I guess. Could you tell me what it might be called? and what it was meant to be used for. I can't find it in any books that I have looked at. Thank you very much for your help.
