Block style numbers were occasionally used in the early part of the century (Just think, in another few weeks we'll be saying, "at the beginning of the last century"!), on leaf-decorated ware and again, toward the end of stoneware production, on wing-decorated pieces. I don't recall seeing it used on a three-gallon jar, however. I seem to remember someone posting a question quite a while back, asking about exactly such a thing: What was the smallest-sized piece I'd seen with block letters. (That wasn't you, was it?) I(f not, you might search the archives for that question.
