Is it possible to remove stains from saltglaze?

I have a four-gallon salt glazed jar, and yes, it is one of the hotly debated "SA" pieces. For those Wing Tippers who have seen the posts about "SA" decorated crocks, here is a picture:

My question is, is there a safe way to remove the oil or lard stains that seeped into the outer wall of pieces like this? This one got cracked early in its life, and whatever was stored inside leaked through the crack and into the walls.
