Wally: I have heard that it had something to do with the ability to stack the plates. Those with the flatter rims would stack better. That would make those with the arch earlier. I think it was Cliff Eckdahl who told me that. Perhaps Cliff could confirm. Marilyn and I have some of both types with the ones inherited from my Grandmother being the arched variety. A stack of plates with both types mixed in really looks strange but they are still wonderful.
