The story that I have heard about these "Railroad" crocks is that they were used to store water for the lavatories or other purposes in railroad cars. They would possibly have been built into some type of cabinet. As such, your piece is not "one of a kind", as several have been seen over the ears. I can't verify the story, but it doesn't seem too far fetched.
