Perhaps the proliferation of credit card payments (PayPal) is at least partly to blame. In the early days of eBay most payments were made by check or money order, which required direct communication between buyer and seller. With PayPal no direct communication is necessary, which eliminates the personal aspect of the buyer-seller relationship. Most people find it easier to be rude to somebody when no relationship has been established.
