A Note to David

Hey David, first of all I’d like to thank you for taking on the task of manning the helm while I watch (and occasionally make a few suggestions) from the aft.  Great Job!

I’m posting this note publicly for your reference and everyone else.  After moderating Wing Talk through a few conventions I’ve found that deleting posts and text is one of the last things you want to do. I do like that you noted text in a post was removed and that you did it. I know there is a fine line we must walk as the guys with control of the ship and it is not easy do decide what stays and what we drop overboard.  On one extreme there is Mr. Profanity and taunting; no-brainer. On the other extreme is someone who makes a well thought out post backed up by a real world Red Wing related experience, reflection, insight, and artful prose; also a no-brainer.  The colorful post toward, but not quite reaching, profanity/taunting is where our job gets tough… but this is where people express their opinion, which is why Wing Talk is here.  After reading a persons opinion (or two) you can pretty much figure out what motivates them and what they want from interaction in our group.

It takes only a few moments of watching a TV show or listening to a radio station to make a personal judgement whether to change the channel and/or to avoid it all-together in the future.  Threads and people posting on Wing Talk are no different than TV and radio; one can choose not to click on/read/reply to a post as they should know what to expect after monitoring the group for a while.  It seems to me that practicing your right to NOT read/reply to some posts might solve the problems of some here as this reduces fuel to the fire while, at the same time, maintaining our "reasonably-open" philosophy regarding posts.

Although I have left lots of room for interpretation, those are my thoughts about editing Wing Talk David.  What do you think?
