About the time the potteries first opened in Red Wing, a family of settlers was searching for a new place to live. As they drove their wagon down a dirt road, they saw an old man leaning against a fence and stopped to talk. "What are the people like around here?", one of them asked. "What were they like where you came from?", the old man replied. "They were awful!", the settlers responded. "Impossible to get along with. Everyone had it in for us. It was nothing but arguing and bickering and name calling." "Well", said the old man, "folks are pretty much the same around here." With that the settlers complained loudly to each other about the sorry state of people everywhere and moved on. A short time later, another family of settlers stopped to talk to the old man. "What are the people like around here?", one of them asked. "What were they like where you came from?", the old man replied. "They were wonderful!", the settlers responded. "Our neighbors were good friends and we'll miss them very much, but opportunities were few and we had to move on. "Well", said the old man, "folks are pretty much the same around here." They thanked the old man, settled down, and lived happily in that community for many years.
