Dear RWCS Board Of Directors Members and Mr. Newkirk,
You may, or may not, be aware that I've begun a project of creating an index of ALL RWCS Newsletters. This index will consist primarily of key words associated with articles and pictures; we WILL NOT be reproducing any text or pictures from the newsletters as this would obviously be an infringement of copy right law. Once this database is complete it is my intent to create a web-based application on Wing Tips that will allow a user to query the Index for key words and receive a list of newsletters / articles / pictures that matches their query.
The intent of this letter is to:
1. Inform you of the project.
2. Ask for any feedback you have concerning this project.
3. Determine if the RWCS and Mr. Newkirk might want to play a part in the project to further enhance its benefit to the collecting community.
Based on the feedback we've had on Wing Talk (a Wing Tips Discussion Group) I believe this index will be of great value to Red Wing Collectors across the nation but, at the same time, it is not my intent to raise the brow of those who control rights to the actual publication. Rather, it is my desire to create this Index with the support of all concerned parties.
I have done some research into the copy right implications of the index and, based on my interpretation, find we would not break any laws by publishing this index on Wing Tips. As this is an extremely critical issue I certainly want to solicit any differing interpretations you may have! Here is a quick parallel scenario that helped to clarify my position:
The internet is certainly one of the biggest sources of information available today; I therefore us internet web sites as an analogy to the RWCS Newsletter. These web sites obviously contain copy righted material in their pages. There are many different "Search Engines" out there that provide each of us with a database of key words associated with these web sites and their content... and we use these Search Engines every day to find applicable internet sites.
Additionally, I anticipate that this Index will create a demand for copies of old Newsletter articles. I really just want to create the database and not worry, too much, about finding articles for someone but probably should work to facilitate the next logical step after they use our web-based application. I suspect that we could (somehow) work together to provide this service?
Thank you for you time and any feedback you have on this project. Please feel free to forward this email to any appropriately concerned parties. In order to keep the Wing Tips community up-to-date, this note has been posted to Wing Talk.
