If you follow Wing Talk you're probably aware that I submitted a letter of notification to the RWCS BOD and Dave Newkirk a few weeks back. The letter was meant to notify the organization that I am in the process of creating an index of all RWCS newsletters for publication on Wing Tips. Additionally I asked for feedback on the project and solicited the participation of the RWCS to, if possible, enhance the final product.
Since that time I have personally talked with Mr. Newkirk; he has no problems with what we are doing. The RWCS, on the other hand, had to go through formal channels to formulate a response to my letter. Here’s the meat of their recent reply…
after the Executive Board meeting, we had discussed certain guidelines for the Newsletter Index Project. The BOD discussed various issues surrounding the Newsletter Index Project, copyright concerns among them. The final motion that passed was as follows: "the RWCS is in agreement with the concept of Byron Bush working with Dino Fire to get the Newsletter Index posted exclusively on the RWCS Web Site contingent on prior written approval from the past, current, and future newsletter editors. That written approval must be submitted to and approved by the RWCS Executive Board prior to any information being posted on the RWCS Web Site. The above said permission must specifically include written permission to and approval by the RWCS Executive Board to reproduce any articles and/or content".
If one can sort through the verbage, basically it is saying that the Board wants you to work with Dino to have this on the RWCS site only (of course no one can prevent Byron linking to the site) and that before anything is posted, we need prior written approval from all parties involved, not only for just the Index, but for the reproduction of any articles or content (the Board agrees with Wally in that just posting an Index without access to the newsletter content would be a rather pointless activity). But before any effort towards either an Index or the newsletter content is made, we need approval from Dave N. and the new newsletter editors (for future use) for the posting of an Index, and for reproduction of any content. Ever since Dave Newkirk, the classified ads are part of the newsletter considered the domain of the editor.
If and when this would all come to pass, the Board would set up some kind of date beyond which newsletter content could not be posted on the Web Site, so as not to devalue current newsletters.
This is an exciting project, but one that would be a lot of work. Byron, I thank you again for volunteering to help. I sincerely hope you are still willing to go ahead with the project and work with Dino within the parameters set by the Board.
END OF REPLY
I’m very interested in hearing what our Wing Tips community has to say about this note and urge you to let me know what you think of the BOD’s position. For clarity, I have posted a copy of my “Original Letter to the BOD” just below this note and hope that you’ll carefully read that text before you reply.
