Over the weekend I took atomic Energy merit badge through Boy Scouts and knew that there would be a geiger counter at the sesion so I brought along a shard of a wing and a orange reed dinner plate because I knew that they were radioactive and wanted to see how much. When the wing was placed under the geiger counter it barely clicked. When I got within 6 feet of the counter with the plate it started to click and as I placed it under the counter It was allmost off the scale at 4,000 counts per minute! and the counter bid not sound like the usal clicking it made a humming sound because of the frequeancy of the counts. Theteacher said that the plates would be regarded by the E.P.A. as hazardous waste and did not reccomend eating off of them. Am I saying get rid of your collection of 1930's orange dinnerware or never eat off of it NO but it is something to be aware of and you should not leave your food on them for long periods of time like your leftover hotdish in one of these dishes for a week. After all people have been eating off of these dishes for years but it proably was not the best thing to use them as everyday dishes. NOTE this only goes for orange glazed items made in the reed plain chevron and fondoso patterns.
