As Dave said, the numbers for the ovals come from Red Wing Potters & Their Wares, page 146. Actually, that page shows only the Red Wing Union Stoneware Company's ovals, there were also the Union Stoneware and the Minnesota Stoneware companies' and the Red Wing Potteries, Inc's ovals. Those are shown on pages 103 and 175. There were a lot of collectors 20+ years ago who used to spend a lot of time studying stuff like this. I'm gratified to note that over the past few years inquiry is becoming an important part of collecting again, in place of concentration on only the rare and expensive pieces. While we were in Red Wing this past weekend I saw a number pieces in the shops with notes (and prices) reflecting the desirability of the particular ovals. I also saw several examples of the elusive "12th Oval", the 2-1/4" version of oval #8. Alas, they were all large pieces of ware. I still need an example on a 2-gallon jar. There have been claims made, and even examples touted, as to other oval styles. The examples I've seen, said to be in "outline type face" looked to me to be the result of the colorant "squeegeeing-out" onder pressure as it was stamped, rather than a bonafide varient. But, I'll keep looking.
The photos for the book are filed away in an inaccessable spot right now, or I'd send you some scans.
