The value of the Society's newsletter

I'm a new member of the Society, having joined this year. I live in Southern California, not the Midwest, and I thought joining the Society would be a way to feel part of the Red Wing community. And I thought the newsletter would be the primary means by which this sense of community and excitement for Red Wing would come. Because I live so far from Minnesota and can't afford to attend the annual convention, the newsletter is the one tangible benefit of my membership fee. Yet the newsletter is of little value to me -- it seems filled with bios of officers and committee heads. It seems a vehicle for society insiders to promote themselves. I realize that some of that stuff is necessary around election time (but maybe not since you can't vote unless you go to the convention -- so the bios could just be given out there). Anyway, I hope the next editors spend more time on Red Wing pottery rather than the people behind the society. As it stands, what are the benefits of a society membership for people who can't go to the convention? The newsletter? I'm very thankful for this Web site because it doesn't seem so top-down as the newsletter and focuses on the pottery.
