I originally started making jewelry out of chipped & cracked Red Wing dinnerware several years ago. My parents (who are avid collectors of the Wares) had boxes of Red Wing dinnerware in their basement and wanted to reduce their inventory. As with any big purchase, many of the pieces were far too damaged to resell but the folks really didn't want the throw the items away; hey, they're still Red Wing!
Mom suggested that I try to salvage the damaged items by cutting them up and mounting them in a setting as either an ear ring, pendant, or brooch. I had reasonable success with my initial crude tools and findings but was not-at-all satisfied with the final product as the beauty of the hand painted images on the dinnerware demanded a better presentation.
Eager to produce a higher quality product, I signed up for a Silver Smithing class offered by a local community college. Within several weeks my shop was fitted with all the tools required to delicately extract the hand painted images from the clay products and mount them in elegant sterling silver settings. The rest is history!
Because of the time and expense required to build a quality piece of jewelry I carry a very low inventory of pre-fabricated items (usually none). Please use the jewelry on this series of pages to get a feel for my work and generate some ideas when you special order your piece. I find this method allows my customers to specify exactly what they want to meet their special needs. Red Wing Dinnerware:
I do have around 250 pieces of Red Wing dinnerware in the shop so odds are that I'll
have anything you want for pins, pendants, and ear rings. I certainly encourage you
to send me any of your chipped/cracked dinnerware; you may have that special item handed
down from grandma that you just dropped but don't want to throw away.
Red Wing Stoneware:
If you're interested in a belt buckle made from a Red Wing stoneware shard I do have
a limited supply of ovals to choose from. If you're after a shard I don't have we
may be able to special order it from my supplier; this will take an extra week or so.
Other Than Red Wing:
Do you collect something other than Red Wing and want something made? I
can help! My extensive array of diamond tipped tools allows me to work with just
about any clay product; from a delicate plate to a sturdy stoneware shard. If you
have a clay product to be mounted for jewelry just let me know. Odds are I can help.
Obviously, the cost of your special order is going to be based on several factors but primarily on the size & complexity of the piece along with cost and availability of the shard. Here's a table of the minimums you can expect to pay for my work:
