After a careful search of both the Reiss and Dollen artware books only five pieces from this category could be found. A sixth piece, a letter box, might be considered part of this group since it has a hole that allows it to be hung from the wall. Simon shows a pair of magnolia planters.
Reiss shows the following:
| violin #907- p 222 | |||||
| banjo #908- p 222 | |||||
instrument #M1484- p 222
| |||||
| letter box #660- p 218 |
Dollen shows the musical instrument #M1484 on p 69.
Simon shows a pair of magnolia planters, #1831.

These artware pieces were used to make floral center pieces. They are usually some type of figurine with holes toward the bottom into which the cut or artificial flowers could be inserted.
The piece most commonly seen is the antiqued brown deer frog. It is probably the most widely recognized, other than maybe the wing ash tray, piece of Red Wing artware made. Because it is so plentiful, the antiqued brown is less valuable than the several other colors the deer and accompanying console bowl can be found. Some collectors are even a little scornful of the antiqued brown set because they are easily found. It seems difficult to argue convincingly that a piece of relative beauty can be too plentiful.
A search of the Reiss book shows the following pieces:
| #598A- p 139 | |
| #1044 swan- pp 151,201 | |
| #1042 sea horse- p 151 | |
| #1045 tropical fish - pp 151,201 | |
| #1043 porpoise(?) - p 201 | |
| # 531 deer- p 202 |
Dollen shows the deer set on pp 25,26 and on the back cover.
Looking through the prices, the flower frogs range in price from $15 for the antiqued brown deer to $300 for the tropical fish.
Picking out things that have holes near the bottom from tiny photos means that some flower frogs might have been missed. If you know of other Red Wing flower frogs send details to Byron Bush, web master.
